From the theater marquee to the geometric mural on the side of the building painted by Molly Rose Freeman, the Alamo has been a truly iconic building in the downtown historic district since its establishment. Located at 19 West Court Square, the Alamo has had many occupants throughout the years. The first known business at this address was in 1889, being a harness shop, sewing machine store, and a grocery store. From 1890-1914, the building housed T. G Farmer’s General Mercantile. T. G Farmer would, in 1914, move his business to the building that now houses the Newnan Times Herald. After T. G Farmer moved buildings, 19 W Court Square was home to McClure’s 5 & 10 Cent Store in the 1920s. From 1925-1986, the building became a movie theater and later turned into a gift shop owned by Elizabeth Farmer Crain in 1986. Currently owned by Propco, the Alamo continues to bring charm to Newnan’s historic downtown district.
